(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the murder of former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani a 'direct attack' on peace efforts in Afghanistan, chancellery spokesman Steffen Seibert said here Wednesday at a routine weekly news conference.
In a condolence message for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Merkel hailed Rabbani's efforts to promote reconciliation in his war-stricken country.
The German leader made clear though that Rabbani's assassination could not break the will of the Afghan people to have peace.
Rabbani was killed Tuesday evening in his well-guarded house in Kabul by a suicide bomber who had hidden explosives in his turban.
He was one of the most prominent victims since the fall of the Taliban in an American-led invasion in 2001.
At the time of his death, Rabbani headed a peace council that was leading efforts to negotiate with the Taliban.
Germany has thousands of troops based in mostly northern Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
